Lambie threatened with beheading

A poison pen letter claiming that terrorists plan to behead outspoken Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie has been referred to police, it's been reported.

The letter includes images of a man being beheaded and warns the senator she is the enemy of the Islamic State group, "therefore, I will take the honour in beheading you", News Corp Australia reported on Sunday.

Senator Lambie's office has conceded the letter could be a fake threat, linked to opponents of a new mosque in Adelaide, but they have referred it to Australian Federal Police.

The letter purports to be from the Adelaide Islamic State Mujahideen and suggests the planned mosque would celebrate the efforts of Lindt cafe gunman Haron Monis to expand Islamic State's philosophy.

Senator Lambie told News Corp the contents of the letter were disgusting but she had no plans to abandon her pursuit of tougher laws against terrorists, including the death penalty.

South Australian Police Assistant Commissioner Bryan Fahy said the force was aware of the threat and was working with federal police.
