Swimming big guns hit town

Some of the world's best swimmers slipped quietly into Perth yesterday as Team USA jetted in just in time for Australia Day celebrations.

The powerful Americans, led by 11-times Olympic medallist Ryan Lochte, are Australia's biggest rivals in the pool and will make their BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series at HBF Stadium this week.

The 24-strong team checked into their city hotel after arriving just after midday and then headed straight to the pool for a short training session.

They were not wearing team uniforms as they arrived at Perth Domestic Airport after flying through Melbourne and boarded the team bus without being stopped by fans.

Lochte, 30, is the biggest name on the team and walked through the terminal alone wearing a red baseball cap.

The team were due to train again this morning before enjoying Australia Day at the Novotel Perth Langley.

They are expected to watch tonight's Skyworks from the hotel's rooftop balcony.

The Super Series gets underway on Friday night, with the Americans hoping to stop Australia from continuing their domination of the event now in its third year.

Teams from Japan and China will also contest the unique outdoor event
