Driving and theft charges after pursuit

Officers who allegedly spotted a black Holden Commodore with number plates that did not match the car pursued the car on Albany Highway in Kenwick yesterday afternoon.

The driver allegedly sped away from police and failed to stop for the officers when they set off lights and sirens around 4pm, a police spokesman said.

"Officers followed the vehicle for a short distance before losing sight of the vehicle," the spokesman said.

A short time later a member of the public reported an abandoned vehicle in Heron Place, Maddington.

Officers attended and with the assistance of the police helicopter were able to locate and apprehend the offenders nearby.

A 28-year-old man from Parmelia was arrested and taken into custody.

He was interviewed in relation to this and two other incidents that occurred this month.

He was charged with two counts of Steal Motor Vehicle, and one count each of Assault with Intent to Prevent Arrest of a Person, Fail to Stop, Reckless Driving, and Possession of stolen or unlawfully obtained property.

Bail was refused and he will appear in Perth Magistrates Court this morning.
