Jamin Wu, a 16-year-old with a love of film music, is WA’s top student.

The Perth Modern School graduate has been awarded the Beazley Medal for excelling academically across five courses, including two each from the humanities and maths and sciences.

He was awarded a general exhibition for achieving the best all-round results in last year’s WA Certificate of Education exams and a course exhibition for topping the State in Japanese as a second language.

He also received certificates of distinction for mathematics, chemistry and physics, though his favourite subjects were literature and music.

The Waterford teen also attained the highest-possible Australian Tertiary Admission Rank of 99.95, which is based on a student’s four best subjects.

He was on holiday in Japan this week when his father sent him an email telling him to call the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for some good news, but he did not expect to find out he had topped the State.

Jamin said he listened to film sound tracks to relieve stress when studying for exams.

He hopes to study medicine so he can help people, but has not yet decided which university to attend.

Applecross Senior High School’s Robert Rubery won the Beazley Medal for the best results in a vocational program.

He achieved four vocational education and training qualifications, including a certificate IV in information technology networking, a certificate III in information, digital media and technology and certificates I and II in sport and recreation.

The computer gaming enthusiast plans to spend a year at TAFE before going to university to do computer science or cyber security.

A full list of all the exhibition and award winners from every school will be published in The Weekend West tomorrow.
