Young guns set for Ironkids

Ashleigh and Carson Websiter will be in the Ironkids event tomorrow.

Busselton siblings Ashleigh and Carson Webster have not reached double digits in age, but they have already caught the triathlon bug.

Ashleigh, 9, and Carson, 8, will compete in the Legendary Ironkids Busselton event tomorrow, which runs alongside the SunSmart Ironman WA.

The event starts at 8.45am on Saturday, December 6 at the Busselton Foreshore and is open to all children aged between seven and 13.

Seven to 10-year-olds will take on a 100m swim, 1.5km bike ride and 500m run, while 11 to 13-year-olds will tackle a 200m swim, 3km bike ride and one kilometre run.

St Joseph's Primary School students Ashleigh and Carson have already participated in several Ironkids events in Busselton and Mandurah, after picking up the triathlon passion from their stepfather.

The sports-mad pair also enjoy surf lifesaving and swimming. Proud mum Sharon Nickels said she was happy to support Ironkids because the organisers promoted participation rather than winning.

"Whether they come across the line last and walking or they're the first coming through, the crowd and commentators give the same response," she said.

"Participation-wise, it's a great event."
