Car slams into taxi, hits house

A Balga couple say they could have been killed after a car slammed into their house just as they were reversing out of their garage last night.

Arpane Swaroop was on her way to work about midnight and was in the car with her husband Swaroop Kumar when they noticed a car heading towards them in the driveway of their house at the corner of Playden Way and Curlington Crescent.

The car, being driven by a woman, hit a kerb before and slammed into their neighbour's parked taxi, limestone mailbox and fence.

It continued towards their property and hit the portico and adjoining garage of Mrs Swaroop's house, narrowly missing the couple and a front bedroom, where Mrs Swaroop's friend was sleeping.

"We had just reversed into our driveway and could see the car's lights coming towards us so we quickly drove the car forward before she could get us," Mrs Swaroop said.

"I was worried we could have died."

She said the force of the crash was so intense that it felt like an earthquake had struck.

Her neighbour, taxi driver Suresh Batra, said his car was so extensively damaged it would probably be written off.

"The car is so damaged that I will not be able to work for two weeks, and I have a wife who is pregnant," Mr Batra said.

His taxi had been parked in his driveway, but the force of the crash pushed it and his limestone mailbox a few metres into his garden.

Mrs Swaroop said the taxi slowed the car slightly and saved their lives.

The female driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
