Sea rescue follows boat sinking
Two men had to be rescued after their boat sunk off the coast of Mullaloo last night.
One of the men used a mobile phone to make an emergency call to his wife as his 6.1m aluminium vessel started taking on water about 7.10pm.
The man’s wife alerted authorities before the men activated their EPIRB.
Two vessels from Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group, an Australian Maritime Safety Authority aircraft and a police helicopter were sent.
Whitfords VSRG Commander Mark Carruthers said his crew were in mobile contact with one of the men and found the duo floating about 2km off the coast.
“Once we were in the area he directed us straight to them,” Cmdr Carruthers said.
The men had spent just under an hour in the water and were assessed by paramedics when the rescue boat arrived back at Ocean Reef.
Cmdr Carruthers said neither man required hospital treatment.
“They were in a bit of shock and cold,” Cmdr Carruthers said.
“They were checked out and deemed to be OK and allowed to go home.”
It is understood the men had been returning to Ocean Reef from Scarborough when their boat hit trouble.
