A police officer was hospitalised after he was sprayed in the face with a liquid yesterday.

Police on patrol saw the man, who is known to them and has two outstanding warrants, in a utility in Thornlie.

The officers became involved in a scuffle with the man has they tried to remove him from the vehicle to arrest him.

The man sprayed one of the officers in the face with the liquid, which police said was similar to OC spray.

The driver reversed at speed, crashing into the police vehicle before driving off.

The spray incapacitated the officer, who received medical treatment in hospital.

He has since been released.

The utility was found abandoned later than night at a different address in Thornlie. It was seized and is being forensically examined.

A search of the property failed to locate the man, but he was arrested in Thornlie today and is assisting police with their inquiries.
