Home is where the jitters are

Hayley McElhinney has acted in films, TV shows and on Broadway with Cate Blanchett but she has never felt such jitters as she approaches her Perth homecoming performance next month.

She will appear in White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, a play performed by a different actor each night with a script given to them only when they go on stage for the first time. "It is terrifying because I don't know anything about it and there is potential humiliation in that," McElhinney said of the ultimate nightmare for an actor.

The 1999 WA Academy of Performing Arts graduate has returned after four years in Los Angeles and said her stage fright got worse with each success because she felt she had more to lose.

McElhinney, whose sister Mandy (Paper Giants, Love Child) shot to fame in the Rhonda insurance ads, said she had resisted temptations to find out about the play, which runs at the State Theatre Centre from September 2-13.

McElhinney appears on September 4.
