Kwinana woman 103 years young

Rum and raisin ice-cream, crosswords and singing are a few of 103-year-old Margaret Mundy's favourite things.

The Kwinana resident celebrated her 103rd birthday last Wednesday with her friends, family and Care Options staff.

Born in Maresfield, a village in Sussex, England, in 1911, Mrs Mundy still has fond memories of the beachside area, singing the Sussex by the Sea song with ease.

She married a farmer named Tom and had three children Patrick, Lionel and Gary.

Later in life, she migrated to Australia to be closer to her son after her husband died, and became an Australian citizen in 1999. Mrs Mundy became a Care Options client when she was 99 and still lives mostly independently, receiving domestic assistance and social support services.

Care Options support worker Mandy Tinnion, who has cared for Mrs Mundy since November, described her as an "amazing woman".

Mrs Tinnion said she helped Margaret with tasks around the home, including hanging out washing, vacuuming, tidying up, cooking and doing the dishes.

"To reach 103 years of age and still be living independently is truly amazing and something very few of us are likely to experience," she said.

"She still has a great sense of humour and zest for life. "She often breaks out in song while we're in the car."

Mrs Tinnion said she had developed a lovely friendship with Mrs Mundy and enjoyed their weekly outings.

"She is always eager to go out," she said.

"We go out twice a week shopping and also down to the foreshore at Rockingham. Margaret loves to have rum and raisin ice-cream or a nice apple slice and cream each week."

As for the secret to her longevity, Mrs Mundy loves doing puzzles, jigsaws and crosswords to keep her brain active.

Mrs Mundy said she appreciated the help of Care Options Social Support service.
