Water police divers have found what is believed to be the remains of a 38-year-old diver who went missing off the Mandurah coast.

A police spokeswoman said it appeared the man may have been bitten by a shark.

The man, believed to be a local, was diving for lobsters with friends about 5km off the Dawesville Cut when he failed to surface about 1.30pm.

“Today water police divers located human remains believed to be that of the missing man close to the dive site,” the police spokeswoman said.

“The friends did not observe any attack and the cause of death is unclear at this stage.”

Searchers, including water police, rescue groups and the police air wing, scoured the ocean for days but failed to find any trace of the man or his equipment.

Further investigations are now underway and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
