Catherine Martin has won the costume design Oscar for her extravagant work on The Great Gatsby.

The win is the third Oscar of Martin's career and pulls her equal with the great costume designer Orry George Kelly as having the most Academy Award wins by an Australian.

Martin beat fellow Australian Michael Wilkinson who was nominated for his costumes on American Hustle.

"I do have a few words tucked into my bra," she said.

"It's a very Australian thing to do. It's where you put your tissues. I'll be very short.

"Mainly I'd like to thank my incredible team they're my golden girls, they've been working for me for 25 years ... and of course my ... husband Baz Luhrmann, he makes it all possible. He dreams the dream."

Fellow Aussie Naomi Watts presented the award.

Martin is expected get her fourth Oscar later in the ceremony when she and The Great Gatsby set decorator Beverley Dunn are nominated together for the production design statuette.

Martin, who with Luhrmann make a formidable filmmaking team, won the costume and art direction Oscars in 2002 for Moulin Rouge!

The 86th Academy Awards are being held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
