Driver dies after car lands on him

A 35-year-old Kununurra man has died in an horrific crash which saw his car land on top of him.

The man was found under his Toyota Rav 4 by a passing motorist 30km south-east of Wyndham on the Great Northern Highway yesterday about 10.30am.

The motorist flagged down a passing vehicle and a satellite phone was used to call the emergency services.

Police have notified the dead man's family and are now investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

A police spokesman said the car had been just within the Wyndham town border, travelling towards Kununurra, when it appears to have left the road, travelled 150m into the bush, hit a concrete culvert and become airborne.

“The driver was ejected and the car has landed approximately 50m away from where it became airborne, on its roof, on top of him,” he said.

Police are urging motorists to drive with extra care as the long weekend comes to a close.

“Many people will be returning home from long weekend activities, we would urge motorists to take care on the roads and, particularly if travelling on country roads, to take advantage of rest stops and roadhouses along the way.”
