Crab man stranded in estuary

A man searching for crabs in the Harvey Estuary had to be rescued after he failed to return to shore last night.

The man had gone crabbing with his wife at Herron Point.

She waited in their car while he went out into the water.

He returned to the car at about 8.30pm and the pair agreed he would continue crabbing for a little while longer.

The man's wife rang police at 11.20pm when her husband failed to return and could not be seen in the water.

The police helicopter was tasked and infra-red equipment found him about 1km from the shore in waist-deep water.

A small tinny brought him back to shore.

St John Ambulance officers check the man but he did not require medical assistance.

It is unclear if the man became disorientated or if he was stuck in the sand.
