Brand wants to 'gay marry' Abbott

Russell Brand

Controversial British comedian Russell Brand says he wants to “gay marry” Prime Minister Tony Abbott when he visits Australia.

Brand will head Down Under in October to perform his Trew World Order stand-up show.

He says there are a lot of “weird” things going on in Australia, mentioning Indonesia’s execution of Bali Nine drug smugglers Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan and the plight of asylum seekers being held in detention centres.

“I tell you what I’ve learnt, right, I’ve made a few quid, I’ve been famous a while - I have got a voice, I’ve got a platform, you can use it to do stuff that’s important and worthwhile,” he told Kiis 1065 on Monday.

“When I was a kid the only thing I thought that mattered was getting rich and famous and then I got rich and famous, and I now know it’s not the only thing that matters.”

Brand said he has Prime Minister Tony Abbott in his sights.

“I would like to gay marry him so hard,” he said.

Australia will not follow Ireland and hold a [referendum on gay marriage after the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader said they preferred that Parliament to resolve the issue.

He said he also found Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce’s reaction to Johnny Depp’s dogs hilarious.

The Yorkshire terriers, Pistol and Boo, were hounded out of Australia after it was revealed they had arrived into Brisbane on Depp’s private jet without being declared at customs.

There is now an investigation under way as to how the pooches escaped border control.

“Johnny Depp is a rich man, he could just buy more dogs,” Brand said.

“I loved your agriculture minister ... Barnaby, he was so excited to be involved in that, wasn’t he.”
