'Great idea': Homemade device could save animals suffering in bushfires

A South Australian conservation group has come up with a “great idea” to help bushfire-affected wildlife using a homemade device.

Arid Recovery, which is based in Roxby Downs northwest of Adelaide, shared photos of its own homemade water fountain on Facebook.

Some areas of South Australia were hit with temperatures above 45 degrees before Christmas and tourist hotspot Kangaroo Island has been ravaged by fires.

The group wrote the fountains can be made from equipment available in any hardware store.

“The key is to completely seal the top and bottom of the PVC tube with plumbers cement,” Arid Recovery wrote.

“This creates a vacuum that holds the water in the tube and limits evaporation. They last about a fortnight here in 40-plus degree temperatures before they need to be refilled.”

A small, elbow pipe near the bottom is where animals can drink from.

Arid Recovery said it’s best to place the fountains among some shelter to not only reduce evaporation but provide cover for animals from predators.

A man asked if kangaroos can drink from the fountains to which Arid Recovery replied, “it should be able to”.

People called the contraption a “great idea”.

“Awesome,” one man wrote.

“Such good people in the world, especially at the moment with Aussie fires too.”

Another man added he was going to test one on his guinea pigs.

Others added they have used a similar system for feeding their own chickens.
