The Fortune Hotel's strongest alliance has been destroyed as Adam and Michael were sent home.

The ITV gameshow set in a Caribbean resort is now down to just four couples competing to claim the briefcase containing the jackpot cash prize of £250,000. Three of the remaining cases were empty and one contained the Early Check Out card, making the couple holding it at the end of the day The Unfortunates, who must leave the competition

Mother and son Jo-Anne and Will have managed to hang on to the case with money in for the majority of the show so far. But with just three days to go, friends Jae and Cherish have managed to snatch it in a secret swap, after winning the Room Service Challenge. And a tense evening case-swapping session, in which host Stephen Mangan announced all couples must make a swap, ended in tears.

The Fortunates Jo-Anne and Will have been in an alliance with Adam and Michael, best friends from Bognor Regis, for some time. They also held the case with the money in at the start of the day. But Jae and Cherish won the Room Service Challenge of packing a suitcase that was neither the heaviest nor the lightest. They chose to secretly swap cases with Jo-Anne and Will and became The Fortunates, holding the money.

Jae and Cherish are in alliance with best friends Scott and Tommy. Jae and Cherish lied to Scott and Tommy that they had lost the Room Service Challenge and said that in order to stay safe they would swap cases with them. Then Scott and Tommy should swap back with them in order to avoid the Early Check Out card.

Meanwhile, married couple Aysha and Samm held the Early Check Out card and faced going home. But they found themselves being courted by both alliances to join their side and take out the rival team. At the evening Night Cap in the Lady Luck bar couples chose who to swap cases with in order based on who performed best in the day's coconut shy challenge. Adam and Michael lost the challenge and had to swap first. Jo-Anne and Will won and were last to swap.

It was too much for Aysha who broke down in tears during the case-swapping. She told everyone: "We're not happy with giving out the Early Check Out card. Adam and Michael they came to us and had a conversation. They knew that we had the Early Check Out card because they must have been the ones who gave it to us. What also offended me was we sat in the van today and Adam and Michael said they see us as weak. Whoever gave us the Early Check Out see us as weakest."

Before Aysha and Samm could announce their swap Will spoke up and said: "I've got something I'd like to say. Aysha and Samm the Early Check Out card is in your possession. You've got two options, you can either give it to someone below you, or you can give it to us and let us take someone out."

Aysha then began to cry and said: "We didn't want this case, we didn't want this power, but now we've got this power we have to use it." Jae said: "We have never used our alliance to manipulate another couple or lie. Can we get this moving, we've got other swaps to make."

Aysha and Samm chose to swap with Adam and Michael, meaning that they went home. Jae and Cherish swapped back with Scott and Tommy and kept the money, banking another £10,000. Adam and Michael hugged everyone as they left saying: "We've had a wonderful time, we've met wonderful people, we've played the game that's all we've done. We've made friends for life. Nothing's personal and I hope you guys understand that as well."

Will whispered to his mum: "It's going to be everyone against us now." Jo-Anne replied: "It doesn't matter."

Viewers have complained that they are starting to lose track of what is going on the show.

When the series launched on ITV earlier this month some complained it was a "cheap knock off" of BBC show The Traitors, while others have become hooked on the tense gameshow. But by the beginning of week two many viewers on social media admitted they were feeling a bit "lost".

The four couples remaining are mother and son Jo-Anne and Will from Sheffield, best friends Scott and Tommy from north London, married couple Aysha and Samm from London and best friends Jae and Cherish - who currently hold the money. As The Fortunates Jae and Cherish choose who will receive the Early Check Out card for the next day.

The Fortune Hotel continues at 9pm on Wednesday on ITV1, STV and STV Player.
