The Café of the Gate of Salvation

The Café of the Gate of Salvation

The Café of the Gate of Salvation is an a cappella (unaccompanied) choir inspired by the African-American vocal tradition: the passionate, committed and exciting music of gospel and spirituals. This is music that's been at the heart of the movement towards political and spiritual freedom.

The group was formed in 1986 and has performed continuously since then, performing at such diverse events as Womadelaide, Melbourne International Festival, the Brisbane Biennale and other prestigious festivals, and for Nelson Mandela's 1990 Australian visit. In 1999, the Café toured the United States, singing to much acclaim in churches in Harlem (New York), Birmingham (Alabama), and New Orleans, and has also toured extensively around Australia and in New Zealand. The choir also performed with the rock-band Powderfinger on the ARIA awards in 2007.
The choir has released four CDs. The self-titled first release in 1991 won several awards in the American-based CARAs (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards) including Best Album, Best Song and Best Soloist. The Café's second CD, "A Window in Heaven", was released in 1995, and was nominated for an ARIA award. Our third CD, "Deluxe" was released and well-received in 2004. A double-CD compilation of live performances was released in 2011 to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Claire McKenzie (Brisbane Courier Mail) said "the music sends shivers up your spine and shoots straight for the heart." John Shand (Sydney Morning Herald), reviewing the launch gig for the CD at Sydney's Basement club, remarked upon "the thrilling power of their steeping harmonies and spire-sharp rhythmic cohesion".

Cafe of the Gate of Salvation is a non-denominational, non-profit community choir in its 28th year of joyful singing. The choir supports programmes for Asylum Seekers, Street Kids, Amnesty International, Walk Against Want, Peace and many other important causes.
