Teen's blunt Christmas message to Scott Morrison after Hawaii holiday

The daughter of a firefighter has penned an open letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison criticising his recent overseas holiday while Australia experiences catastrophic bushfires and smoke-filled skies.

Aish Cowgill, from Wollongong on the NSW South Coast, wrote the Facebook post on December 20, and shared a fundraiser for The Trustee for NSW Rural Fire Service and Brigades Donations Fund.

The 19-year-old started the post by describing the Prime Minster’s response to two volunteer firefighters who died battling blazes in NSW as “insulting” and “not enough”.

“This is the fifteenth Christmas, in my lifetime, that my dad will spend on call, fighting bushfires. I wonder if you are enjoying your holiday in Hawaii, because there certainly isn’t time for him to take a well-earned rest,” Ms Cowgill wrote.

The teenager then drew attention to the smokey conditions causing havoc in NSW.

“I’m sure the fresh air in Hawaii eliminates any coughing or lung infections that the rest of NSW is experiencing. A state health emergency has been declared after all,” she continued.

Ms Cowgill wrote that there was “no escaping this hopeless reality, unless of course we were in your position”, and although she was used to her firefighting father being busy during summer, this year was the worse she had seen.

“For the first year in his thirty-year career, there is no end to the season in sight, 18-hour days for over a month are simply what is expected,” she wrote.

Ms Cowgill also took aim at the Prime Minister’s response to climate change, saying that “each year it gets worse”.

“I can barely see out of my bedroom window, yet I can clearly see the desolate future already occurring because of climate change,” she wrote.

Ending the post she told Mr Morrison she shared the opinion of many Australians – his time was up.

“You can no longer lie to a nation. Your empty words will no longer be tolerated, proof of oncoming disaster has burnt our bushlands and rendered our national animal to near extinction,” she said.

Ending the post Ms Cowgill wrote “you are accountable to the people of Australia, not to yourself”.

The teenager is one of many sharing their anger over Australia’s bushfires, with a woman recently penning a letter to the Prime Minister about her RFS trained 71-year-old father who was still fighting fires.

A mother also questioned the timing of Mr Morrison’s holiday in an open letter, stating that her son deserved a holiday but wouldn’t take time off because of his duty as a FRNSW and RFS volunteer.

On Sunday Mr Morrison apologised for holidaying in Hawaii during Australia’s bushfire crisis but says now is the “time to be kind” instead of scoring political points.

The Liberal leader returned to Sydney on Saturday night and on Sunday morning confirmed he'd been in Hawaii with his family on a trip that was planned six weeks ago.

"If you had your time over again and you had the benefit of hindsight we would have made different decisions," Mr Morrison told reporters in Sydney.

"I am sure Australians are fair-minded and understand that when you make a promise to your kids you try and keep it.

"But as prime minister, you have other responsibilities, and I accept that and I accept the criticism."
