A missing 19-year-old has been rescued after spending four days down a 16-metre deep well. Jeferson Gabriel Gomes was last seen by his mum at breakfast last Saturday when he went to a park but failed to return home.

The young man — who is autistic — sent a message from his phone at 10am before the device lost coverage, prompting his sister Sheila Gomes da Silva to report his disappearance to the police. She said he had no physical health problems and had never gone missing before.

The worried family went to all the health facilities in the area, but no one had seen Gomes.

A CCTV camera caught him running along a trail in the park in Santo André, on the outskirts of São Paulo, Brazil, the day he went missing. After searching the area, local police found him down a well on Wednesday morning, much to his desperate family’s relief.

The shaft is located in a wooded area of the park and is 16m deep, according to local media.

Jeferson, who was conscious, told the officers he had fallen down the hole on Saturday. Firefighters were called in to carry out the rescue, as reported on NeedToKnow, and they abseiled down the hole to reach him.

The 19-year-old was given a hard hat and goggles before he was pulled up the deep shaft. Footage shows him covered in dirt and dust as his rescuers lay him on a stretcher.

While being treated by paramedics, the teen said he felt pain in his ankle and knee and was very thirsty. Authorities say he was taken to a local hospital with a fractured leg.
