Teen dies in Easter drowning tragedy
A teenager has died after jumping off a bridge at a popular swimming spot.
The 17-year-old boy jumped off a bridge at Tweed Coast Rd, Hasting Point, near the Queensland border with New South Wales, on Saturday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at 4.30pm after he failed to resurface.
A rescue helicopter was dispatched with locals assisting in the search.
The boy’s body was later found in the water.
He could not be revived.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
The incident comes days after a man died jumping from a bridge with friends in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Joshua Santos Christian, who moved to Australia from the UK, jumped off Noosa Sound Bridge in Noosa about 1am on March 24, but failed to resurface.
His body was found by emergency services five hours later in the water.
His family launched a fundraising page to pay for his body to be transported from Brisbane to Liverpool in the UK.
