The sinister find inside these children's books

A man from Sydney’s east has been charged after the discovery of more than $600,000 worth of cocaine concealed in children’s books.

The 31-year-old will front court on Tuesday after he allegedly smuggled 1.72kg of the illicit substance to Australia from Portugal.

The man was arrested in the exclusive suburb of Vaucluse about 5pm on Friday after two separate consignments arrived in Sydney on May 1 and May 4.

They were X-rayed and inspected by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers at the International Mail Gateway, where presumptive testing returned positive results for cocaine.

The cocaine has an estimated potential street value of up to $645,000.

Following a search of an address on New South Head Road, police allegedly located and seized electronic items and documents as well as a small amount of cannabis.

The man was taken to Waverley Police Station and charged with import commercial quantity of border-controlled drug and issued with two cannabis cautions.

He appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday, where he was formally refused bail to appear at Central Local Court on Tuesday.
