Nursing home residents' epic lockdown project goes viral

A group of residents from an aged care home in London have gone viral around the globe for a creative lockdown project, which saw them recreate iconic album covers.

Sydmar Lodge Care Home activities coordinator Robert Speker came up with the idea to keep the spirits high for those seniors that have been in lockdown for 120 days due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Robert shared the end results on social media and the images were quickly shared far and wide.

“A little project I did with Sydmar Lodge Residents and carers, recreating classic album covers. Residents at the care home have now been in lockdown for 120 days,” he wrote on Facebook.

The series features 93-year-old Vera recreating Adele's 21. Pensioner Martin Steinberg starred on the 'Born in England' version of Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA.

There were also new versions of David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane, Madonna’s True Blue and Blink-182’s Enema of the State.

The posts on Facebook and Twitter received thousands of shares and hundreds of comments with people calling the idea “brilliant” and “beautiful”.

“I absolutely love this! Congratulations! Amazing work,” one person commented.

“These are so moving. Reminds me of my 97-year-old grandmother telling me that on the inside she was still 18. Beautiful,” another said.

While a third wrote: “These are wonderful and strangely emotional. Brilliant work.”

Even some of the carers got involved in the fun project, including for this great version of Queen’s iconic cover.

Robert hinted on Twitter that the images had received such a great response, a calendar idea had already been floated.

He also shared a GoFundMe page that he has set up to help raise money for other activities for all the residents whilst they remain in lockdown and it has already raised £1,631 ($2,900 AUD).
