Burnt car linked to suspected gang shooting
A 27-year-old is fighting for his life after he was shot in the head and chest in a drive-by shooting, while one of three burnt out cars found nearby has been linked to the incident.
Police rushed to a carpark in Canterbury Road in Campsie, a southwest suburb of Sydney, about 9:20pm on Tuesday after reports of gunfire.
It is believed two people were sitting in a car when it was sprayed with bullets from another vehicle by unknown gunmen.
The suspected shooters are still on the run.
The 27-year-old man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
The condition of the other person in the car is not known at this stage but he is believed to have fled the scene.
A short time after the shooting, police found three suspected getaway cars, including one which had crashed into a house, which had all been completely burnt out.
One of the cars ahs been linked to the shooting.
Investigations are ongoing to confirm if the destroyed cars were linked to the shooting.
The shocking incident marks an increasing escalation of the gang-related violence which has plagued Sydney recently, after three shootings in the space of five days in July.
The shooting is reportedly connected to other gangland violence across the city.
The growing trend of violence is related to a struggle for control of Sydney’s lucrative drug market, Police Commissioner Karen Webb told the ABC at the end of July.
On Wednesday morning, a large crime scene had been established at the site of the shooting and a police investigation was ongoing, NSW police confirmed.
