The surprise Aussie beach rated among the best in South Pacific
Australian beaches took out seven of the top 10 places in Tripadvisor's Traveller's Choice Awards.
It’s been voted as one of the best beaches in the South Pacific but it’s a safe bet most Aussies haven’t even heard of its name, let alone paid a visit.
Emily Bay on Norfolk Island, an external Aussie territory just 1,600 kilometres east of Sydney, climbed three spots in Tripadvisor’s 2023 Traveller’s Choice Awards to take third position.
Renowned as a quiet paradise with unique flora and fauna, Emily Bay is often overlooked as a destination. But not anymore.
“As a huge beach fan myself, I know the impossible-to-resist allure of sunshine and turquoise water and certainly there's plenty of that on this year's list,” said Sarah Firshein, the Head of Editorial at Tripadvisor. “But there are some delightful surprises as well.”
Australia takes out seven winners in the region
Australia dominated the list of the best beaches in the Pacific Ocean’s southern hemisphere, taking out seven spots in the top 10.
Coming in first was Western Australia’s Cable Beach with 22 kilometres of pristine white sand and turquoise waters. Broome’s hot spot, famous for its shoreline camel tours, climbed up from second place in 2022.
Sydney put a newcomer on the map with Manly Beach named as the second best in the region not only for its natural beauty but also its proximity to world-class restaurants, shopping and recreation.
Rounding out the Aussie haul were three Queensland stars with Mooloolaba Beach in fourth, Port Douglas in sixth and Whitehaven in seventh. While another WA beach took pride of place with Turquoise Bay in Exmouth taking out ninth position.

Aussie victors among worldwide award winners
After analysing millions of reviews from travellers around the world, Tripadvisor has also determined beachgoers' favourite coastline on Earth.
Baia do Sancho in Fernando de Noronha in Brazil came in on top followed by Eagle Beach in Aruba in the Caribbean.
Australia once again solidified its reputation as a world-class beach destination with two beaches named in the top 13. Cable Beach was picked for third spot while Manly came in at 13.
