Newfoundland and Labrador's health authority says a sprinkler has caused water damage in the main operating room of the province's largest hospital, causing some surgeries to be cancelled on Thursday.

N.L. Health Services sent a news release just after 7:30 a.m., saying only those patients affected will be contacted to reschedule their surgeries. Other procedures will proceed as normal.

The problem was caused by a frozen sprinkler line. The province has been dealing with freezing temperatures since Wednesday, when the wind chill in St. John's dipped below a frigid -30C.

"NL Health Services apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause," the release says.
