A follow-up to 2023's The Super Mario Bros Movie has finally been confirmed by Nintendo.

Starring Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black and more, the film based on Nintendo's iconic plumbing brothers smashed records upon release, nabbing the title of the biggest video game movie debut of all time and the best second weekend ever for an animated movie.

It seemed that a return to the Mushroom Kingdom was therefore inevitable – and in an announcement today (March 10) in honour of Mario Day, a follow up was finally confirmed.

In the video, which was released to keep fans updated on the latest news relating to Nintendo's most famous character, one of the company's representative directors, Shigeru Miyamoto, confirmed that the studio was again working with animation studio Illumination.

"[Nintendo] are now working with the folks at Illumination on a new animated film based in the world of Super Mario Bros." he said.

"The team at Illumination, who worked on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, is also producing this film with Nintendo."

The video then cut to Illumination executive Chris Meledandri, who added, "I'm thrilled to be here along Miyamoto-san to officially announce our return to Super Mario Bros."

Meledandri confirmed that directors of the first film (Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic) and artists from Illumination Studios Paris, "have been busy at work storyboarding scenes and developing set designs for new environments," and start animation "soon".

Although fans would be forgiven for thinking that the newly announced project is a direct follow up to the first film, the word 'sequel' was notably avoided through the announcement.

A date of April 3, 2026 was confirmed for the US release – as well as "many other markets" at other dates throughout the same month.

"It’ll have a bright and fun story," Miyamoto teased of the film. "This time we’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further. We’ll let you know once we’re at the stage where we’re ready to share more."

The unnamed Super Mario Bros. movie will be released April 3, 2026.
