Michael Chamberlain, father of Azaria, dies aged 72
Michael Chamberlain, the father of baby Azaria who was taken by a dingo at Uluru in 1980, has died at age 72.
Mr Chamberlain, former husband of Lindy, died on Monday night, after complications from leukaemia.
At the time of nine-week-old Azaria’s disappearance, Chamberlain and his then-wife Lindy were camping near Uluru on their way to Darwin.
On the night of August 17, 1980, Azaria vanished.
Mrs Chamberlain was accused of killing her child, but throughout her murder trial she insisted that she saw a dingo leaving the tent where her Azaria was sleeping.
She was convicted on October 29, 1982, before being officially pardoned in 1987.
Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton remarried in 1991 to Rick Creighton.
Lindy asked the media for privacy in a statement.
"I am on my way today to support and be with our children.
"Given Michael’s death was unexpected, I would ask that the media please consider that Michael’s wife and all of his children are deeply grieving and need some space", she said.
In a tell-all interview with Sunday Night in 2012, Michael Chamberlain returned to the site of baby Azaria's disappearance in the shadows of Uluru.
The fourth and final coronial inquest confirmed that his daughter was killed by a dingo.
Chamberlain was accompanied on the emotional journey with Azaria’s sister Zahra, who had never spoken publicly about the devastating events.
The pair came face-to-face with the Aboriginal tracker who followed the dingo that took baby Azaria – but was never called to give evidence.
After years of criticism and condemnation, Dr Chamberlain opened up to Sunday Night about the conspiracy he believes tore him and wife Lindy apart.
He also revealed for the first time the poignant and powerful photos from his private photo album of the day Azaria went missing, as well as the diary entries that detail his marriage breakdown.
