Stepmum's heartbreaking post after boy's tragic death in Sydney storm

A devastated stepmother has shared a heartbreaking tribute to the 14-year-old boy killed in a car crash during Sydney’s wild storm on Wednesday.

Dylan Langhorne was one of three people who lost their lives as a deluge of rain and gale force winds smashed the city for much of the day.

The Pennant Hills High School student was a passenger in a car that was involved in a horrific two-vehicle crash at Thornleigh on the North Shore on Wednesday morning.

In a moving Facebook post, Dylan’s stepmother, Janda Thompson spoke of the special bond they shared.

“If only I could hold my boy another time, I love you Dylan Langhorne,” she wrote.

“Today was a tragic accident. I will never forget our special bond we had, and you could tell me anything.

“Love you my darling and if you could see the most amazing support we are getting today which you would hate.

“You will always be by my side and I will always say I have 5 beautiful gorgeous children.”

Friends of the popular year eight student shared their own grief, saying their hearts had broken.

“We cannot begin to explain the heart-break this has brought upon our school and its community,” the Penno Student Leadership Council wrote in a Facebook post.

“Our thoughts, hopes & prayers are with the family, friends, students and teachers who are grieving.”

On the same day Dylan died in the crash, a Sydney Emergency Services volunteer collapsed and died while attending a job in the Illawarra.

“This is a tragic event and my deepest sympathies are with the man’s family and friends,” Minister for Emergency Services Troy Grant said in a statement.

A third person also died when their car crashed into a pole on Old Prospect Rd in South Wentworthville on Wednesday day night.

One police officer broke her leg when a tree fell on her police car as she and her partner were at North Ryde, where drivers had unsuccessfully tried to get through a flooded road about 6.45am on Wednesday.

Ausgrid worked overnight to restore power to 3250 homes.

In the CBD, crews also worked into Thursday morning to repair two underground substations which flooded during the storm.
