Staggering amount of garlic stolen from farm in mystery incident

An Aussie farmer has reached out for help after a staggering amount of garlic was stolen from her field in a mystery incident last month.

Farmer Leah McDonald says up to $15,000 worth of garlic was stolen from her property in Cockatoo, south east of Melbourne in late November.

“My entire garlic crop was stolen from the field,” Ms McLeod posted on Facebook on November 28.

“Approximately 300 to 400 kg of Australian and Italian garlic was taken.”

Ms McLeod warned the community of people selling garlic to greengrocers, restaurants or farmer’s markets and urged people to come forward with information.

Police continue to investigate the incident and urge the public to come forward with any information.

“Emerald police are investigating after the report of the theft of a garlic crop in Emerald on 1 December,” Victoria Police said.

“Investigators have been told the theft occurred on the Belgrave Gembrook Road property between 22 and 27 November.

“It is believed approximately 400 kilograms garlic was harvested.”

The farmer has vowed to fight on in spite of the heist.

“Although this has been devastating and disheartening, I’m not giving up on my dream of becoming a successful farmer,” Ms McLeod said.

“I’ll be back with gusto and garlic next year!”
