Splendour: Festivalgoers' sneaky act to beat alcohol ban
Alcohol from outside the Splendour in the Grass site is banned, but that hasn't stopped everyone.
With reports a couple of beers were costing revellers up to $38, it's no surprise some festivalgoers were doing what they could to score a cheap drink at Splendour in the Grass this year as Australia's cost-of-living crisis continues to pinch.
The Byron Bay festival has a strict ban on alcohol purchased from outside the festival however that didn't stop one group who shared their cunning exploits to social media.
Arriving by ute, a video shared to TikTok revealed the group installed a secret compartment in the vehicle's tray allowing them to stash a bunch of beers and presumably spirits before sealing it up and covering it with a sheet of fake grass.
The next clip inside the campsite shows the group sat around a table drinking their successful haul.
The woman who uploaded the video said the stunt saved them "a couple hundred" dollars.
Many users praised their "genius" stunt, which has racked up more than 350,000 views in 24 hours.
"Solid execution," one person wrote. "Outstanding," another said, while others said they wish they'd attempted the stunt.
Others discussed the need to go to such extreme lengths to bring in alcohol, however there were varying reports as to how strict security was.
"We got all our alcohol taken and it was screwed under the car flooring," one person claimed.
Yahoo has contacted Splendour in the Grass for its response to the video.

Alcohol purchased outside of the event is one of many items on the list of banned items for the campsite which also includes inflatable beds and GoPros.
Revellers attending the popular festival had been urged to be on their best behaviour, with a high-visibility police operation of more than 100 officers present at the event, targeting drug use and alcohol-fuelled violence.
Thankfully this year the weather held out after heavy rain led to a disastrous festival in 2022.
