Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk apologizes for using sexist language against MP

Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk apologizes for using sexist language against Iryna Herashchenko, co-chair of European Solidarity faction during a plenary session, Interfax-Ukraine reported on May 22.

“I apologized for these words yesterday and confirmed it today... and said that this is unacceptable,” Stefanchuk said.

Speaker also explained that his words were preceded by “accusations and insults” against him, when he was called a “boor,” so he expressed a wish that the MP would also apologize to him.

Earlier, Herashchenko said that she plans to appeal to the President of the European Parliament Roberta Mecola because of the manifestation of sexism on the part of Stefanchuk, as he, in her words, dismissively called her a “girl.” According to her, “in any European parliament, the speaker would lose his position and career for such a statement.”
