The Spanish government is preparing to send a new package of military aid to Ukraine, which will include 19 Leopard-2A4 main battle tanks, Spanish outlet La Vanguardia reported on March 20, citing sources in the country’s defense ministry.

The delivery will be made in two batches: 10 MBTs will be sent by the end of June and nine more in September, according to the report.

The decision was made by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on March 19 after meeting with Spanish defense contractors, according to Spanish newspaper ABC.

The tanks in question are Leopard 2A4s, part of a group of military vehicles that have been stored for over a decade at an industrial warehouse in Zaragoza. Before being shipped to Ukraine, they will be inspected and refurbished as needed.

Sánchez expects the tanks will already be in Ukraine by the time he attends the NATO summit in Washington on July 9.
