Shocking moment schoolgirl is hit by car crossing busy street – but who's at fault

Shocking footage of a schoolgirl being struck by a car while running across a Melbourne street has sparked an online debate over who was in the wrong.

The young girl can be seen darting in between two cars as they are stopped in traffic reportedly on Kalinda Road in Ringwood.

As she nears the shoulder of the suburban road, a small blue sedan appears out of nowhere and slams into the girl’s leg, causing her to fall on the ground.

The driver can be seen opening the door to help the shocked schoolgirl as she holds her leg.

Others who witnessed the accident also rush to her aid.

The video, which was posted to Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page, attracted plenty of attention online, with some viewers split over who was in the wrong.

Most defended the young girl, saying she’s just a child and the driver on the inside was not using an actual lane.

Others said the girl should have used a pedestrian crossing instead of trying to cross traffic.

Victoria Police told Yahoo News Australia the incident was not reported to police.

Officers said they “are aware of the video and are making enquiries”.
