Shocking $150 million discovery behind headlights of vintage Bentley

Police have made a shocking discovery behind the headlights of a 1960 Bentley car.

NSW Police intercepted a shipping container that arrived via sea cargo into Port Botany in Sydney from Canada earlier this month.

Police said in a statement the container declared to contain the vintage Bentley S2 and examinations of the container identified some anomalies.

After further investigations, police uncovered a large amount of the drug ice, which was hidden behind the car's headlights.

Police partially dismantled the vehicle and in total uncovered 161kg of methylamphetamine and 30kg of cocaine.

Three people were arrested over their alleged roles in the importation of more than $150 million worth of illicit drugs.

A tonne of methylamphetamine has also been seized in a major drug bust as part of the largest detection of the drug at the border in Australian history.

Officers uncovered the illicit substance after they examined a number of sea cargo containers at Port Botany.

Detectives from the State Crime Command's Drug and Firearms Squad were investigating the importation of illicit drugs into NSW in a major crackdown earlier this year.

A number of sea cargo containers that arrived into Port Botany last month were initially seized and police discovered 748kg of meth that was concealed within a marble stone. Three men aged 24, 26 and 34 were arrested and are before the courts.

Australian Border Force officers then examined a number of additional containers that arrived into Port Botany last week.

Specialist officers deconstructed the consignment and found 1060kg of methylamphetamine concealed in the same marble method.

Police said more than 1800kg of ice has been discovered in total, and had a street value of more than $1.6 billion.

"The fact that we have seized a further tonne – potentially 10 million street deals – of this insidious drug just shows how little regard these types of groups have for the wellbeing of the community," Detective Chief Superintendent John Watson said.

"We will allege this syndicate was extremely well connected in several corners of the globe."

Police said more than 1800kg of ice has been discovered in total, and had a street value of more than $1.6 billion.

No charges have yet been laid for this additional consignment and police say further arrests have not been ruled out.
