Bizarre CCTV has been released of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle lurking suspiciously in a Melbourne car yard before stealing a BMW motorbike.

Police are searching for the cartoon-themed bandit who stole the motorbike from a car dealership in Doncaster earlier in September.

'Leonardo' drove a stolen Mitsubishi van to the Doncaster Road dealership about 1.30am on Monday 7 September, Victoria police said.

After stealing the motorbike, which was temporarily parked inside a lift, the Turtle smashed through the dealership gates and set fire to the driver's compartment.

He then set off on the stolen motorbike, a 2015 red BMW S1000XR motorcycle with registration number 1R6BO.
