Body of Aussie surfer found in Indonesia

The body of an Australian man has been found after he was reported missing in Indonesia while surfing at a popular surfing spot west of Bali.

The search was launched for former Bondi local Gunther Kitzler, believed to be in his 50s, after he disappeared while surfing in east Java on Monday.

It’s understood a witness saw Mr Kitzler’s leg rope snap when his board hit a wave.
Mr Kitzler reportedly became unconscious during the incident.

A second wave hit while other surfers were trying to reach Mr Kitzler to help.

Local authorities reportedly found his body on Tuesday morning.

Local media reports the expat was surfing at Pelawangan surf beach in the town of Banyuwangi.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted.
