Girl, 12, charged over alleged school knifing
A 12-year-old girl has been charged after allegedly attacking another pre-teen student with a knife, plunging their high school into lockdown.
The incident happened about 9.30am on Tuesday at Caloundra State High School on the Sunshine Coast.
A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said a 12-year-old boy suffered a non life-threatening cut to his hip.
He was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for treatment, while the school was placed into lockdown.
Two other students were threatened, but not hurt.
Police attended and allegedly found a 12-year-old girl armed with a knife, having also caused some damage to a wall, and took her into custody.
She’s been charged with one count each of wounding, going armed so as to cause fear, possession of a knife in a public place, two counts of common assault, and three counts of wilful damage.
The girl has been denied bail and is due in Maroochydore Children’s Court on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for the Queensland Department of Education said they were aware of the incident.
“The school entered lockdown at 9.30am for approximately an hour and Queensland Police Service and Queensland Ambulance Service attended,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
“Ongoing counselling and support are available for all students and staff.
“No further information can be provided as the incident is currently under police investigation.”
Parents have taken to social media to complain after finding out about the incident from news publications.
“As a parent of that school we have had no info at all and when I called them they said we will get an EMAIL later today from the principal,” one wrote on social media.
“Scary when your kids go there and no communication from school,” another wrote.
“Would be nice if the school could send out a message, instead of reading this on Facebook,” a third said.
