Teen crashes through carport, lands in pool

SA teen crashes through garage into pool

A P-plate driver had to start swimming after his Ford sedan crashed through an carport and plunged into a pool at Flagstaff Hill last night.

Amazingly, a family inside the house and the driver all escaped injury.

Residents on Emerald Street heard the car crash just after midnight.

Belinda Lammin and Janice Lammin were sleeping in the house at the time of the crash.

“Just come around the corner and obviously lost control, hit our second car port door … and sort of skewed off into the pool,” Belinda said.

“He was very apologetic and obviously very shaken … so he wasn’t being a hoon driver or anything, it was just a complete accident.”

Fortunately the 18-year-old driver crawled out o the car and swam to safety, but not before alarming the sleeping residents.

“I really didn’t believe it at first, I really didn’t believe it,” Janice said.

“I think he’s very lucky and the car didn’t submerge. It stayed up but it must have been cold in that water.

SES volunteers supported the carport as a crane was called to carefully lift the pale blue sedan out of the pool.

While no one was hurt in the accident, it could have been much worse if not for a rainwater tank that deflected the out of control vehicle away from a bedroom where Belinda and her six-month-old son were sleeping.

“Thank god for the rainwater tank … saves more than just water,” Belinda said.

A South Australia police spokesperson said the young driver lost control of his vehicle on wet roads before crashing through the carport into the pool.

Police tested the teenaged driver for drugs and alcohol at the scene and he received negative results.

They said the accident caused extensive damage to the structures and reported the 18-year-old over the incident.

He will appear in court at a later date.
