Stories from The Digger's Doctor in print

As the nation prepares to pause for Remembrance Day tomorrow, a famous Adelaide surgeon known to many as ‘The Digger’s Doctor’ has been immortalised in print.

Australian off-spinner Ashley Mallett has recorded Don Beard’s wartime service, as well as a few battles on the cricket pitch.

‘The Digger’s Doctor’ tells many of Doc’s adventures – from the time Sir Donald Bradman had a hit in his backyard to his time during the battle of Kapyong in Korea when his commanding officer commandeered a tank to pick up wounded soldiers.

“There were bullets and mortar and artillery and everything was going at once, but you didn’t feel any fear,” Dr Beard said.

“There were soldiers out there and they needed looking after.”
