A bodyboarder has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being attacked by a shark south of Adelaide.

The attack happened about 80 metres offshore from Parsons Beach, near Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The 1.5 metre shark bit the bodyboarder on the waist at about 9.45am local time.

"It grabbed him on the side of the waist and actually tossed him around a bit, he was lucky to get out of it," witness Ellie Francis said.

Other surfers helped him from the water and he took himself to hospital.

Police said it was only a 'small bite' and the man's injuries were not life threatening.
