Russia's air force targets strategic Black Sea island in power display
Russian forces continue to target Snake Island to demonstrate their perceived air dominance, Southern Defense Forces spokesperson Natalia Humeniuk said during a briefing on April 1.
"When the enemy fails to establish control over the northwestern region of the Black Sea using naval forces, they resort to exerting pressure through aviation," Humeniuk said.
The island has been under consistent assault, with Russian forces deploying guided air missiles or engaging in reconnaissance missions using tactical aircraft.
"There have been instances where tactical aircraft conducted both reconnaissance and attempted missile launches, which ultimately failed," she said.
These aggressive maneuvers by Russian forces also aim to compromise the functionality of critical maritime pathways, as the recommended shipping lanes are in proximity to the island, Humeniuk added.
