Romanian president greenlights Ukrainian F-16 pilot training

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has authorized the training of about 50 Ukrainian pilots on F-16 aircraft at his country's military bases, Romania Insider reported on March 18.

The training is slated to take place at a military base in Fetesti, in southern Romania.

It’s unclear when the training of the Ukrainian pilots will begin, but local media sources claim they will arrive at the base this summer and are expected to complete their training by the end of the year.

Iohannis also notified the Romanian parliament that he approved the transit of equipment and supplies to Ukraine from Finland through Romania.

In August 2023, the Netherlands and Denmark pledged to transfer 61 U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

By Jan. 10, Ukraine's Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian pilots continue to undergo training on F-16 aircraft in several partner countries.

On Feb. 18, Foreign Policy magazine, citing European officials, reported that the first F-16 fighters are expected to arrive in Ukraine around June 2024.
