Rockingham roller derby pirates want support crew

Friendly rivalry is heating up for the region's roller derby ladies the Dread Pirate Rollers as the squad splits in two for the league's first in-house clash.

The Pirates' in-house sides, the Eels and The Brute Squad, will compete for the first time on Saturday night at Armadale Arena.

Eels player Kelly "Sleek" Slee said the home season was created because of a recent surge in interest in the sport, to boost funding for the league, and to have a bit of fun.

Unable to host the game in Rockingham or Kwinana because of a lack of venues, Mrs Slee said the Pirates were putting the call out for spectators to cheer them on in Armadale as they hit, block and jam around the track to score either the Eels' or the Brutes' first victory.

Mrs Slee said the home season would become an annual event consisting of three games to showcase the league's skaters.

She said the Pirates skated all year round, competing in the WA Roller Derby and Perth Roller Derby competitions.

The event will include night stall markets, food vans, and a licensed area.
