‘Rideshare driver’ allegedly holds woman captive
A man has been charged after allegedly posing as a rideshare driver and bringing a woman back to a property where she was prevented from leaving until police arrived.
Queensland Police will allege a 36-year-old woman got into a car she believed to be a rideshare vehicle she’d ordered when leaving a Toowoomba CBD venue about 11.15pm on Saturday.
The driver of the vehicle, who police say was a 24-year-old man, allegedly drove the woman to a Newtown address before taking her into a structure on the property.
Police allege the woman was able to notify a friend about what was going on.
After the friend contacted police, officers arrived at the property and arrested the 24-year-old man.
He was charged with deprivation of liberty.
He was refused police bail and is due to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on March 4.
The woman was taken to Toowoomba Base Hospital for assessment.
Toowoomba detectives are urging anyone who has had similar experiences to come to contact police or through the Alternative Reporting Options website.
