Question about whether cyclist should give way descends into 'chaos'

A road rules question posted by the RACQ to Queensland road users has left drivers frustrated and led to a number of arguments.

The RACQ posted a question to Facebook on Thursday along with a picture showing a yellow car travelling in a left lane with a cyclist not far behind.

The car is planning on turning left while the cyclist wants to travel ahead.

“The cyclist is catching up to the yellow vehicle in slow traffic, who gives way, the driver or cyclist?” the RACQ wrote.

The answer is the cyclist needs to give way to the car.

“A cyclist must not ride past or overtake to the left of a vehicle that is indicating and turning left,” the RACQ wrote.

“If the vehicle was behind the cyclist near the intersection, the driver should slow down and turn behind the bicycle rider.”

However, many used the thread to complain about cyclists.

“I won't give way to a cyclist ever I don't care what the rules are I pay rego and insurance they don’t,” one man wrote.

“Nanny law protects cyclists,” another man wrote.

“They can ride wherever they like and expect motorists to get out of their way.”

Others began to argue about bike registration for roads.

“Nice to know as a cyclist I can stop paying income tax and council rates then,” one man wrote.

Things got far more heated with the RACQ having to start deleting comments.

“Come on guys - let's stick to answering the quiz and not having a go at each other eh?” the RACQ wrote.

Then people turned against the RACQ for trying to moderate the conversation.

“You post a click bait article and then expect people to play nice?” one man wrote.

Another added the RACQ “can't post a cyclist question and not expect chaos”.
