The tragic reason why this snake is biting itself

A distressing photo has emerged of a dying snake in “excruciating pain” biting itself.

The photo, uploaded by Snake Catchers Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan & Gold Coast on Facebook shows a carpet python, mouth wide open, biting into its own body as it crawls out of a garden in Greenslopes, Brisbane.

Despite the upsetting but unusual sight, Snake Catchers director Brian Robinson said it’s a regular occurrence, and one he and his staff see "quite regularly", with a snake close to death.

“Think about it this way – when you get knocked on the arm, what do you do?” he said.

“You use your other arm to grab it and hold it because of the pain. This snake was in excruciating pain and because it’s got no arms or legs it had to bite with its mouth.

“It’s quite normal.”

Mr Robinson explained the python had been hit by a car and eventually died.

“Ninety-nine times out of 100 when people hit a snake with a car it just dies,” he said.

“It’s very rare a snake can survive an accident like that.”
