Woman in hiding after police give details to domestic abuser

Queensland's opposition is calling for stronger domestic violence laws after a police officer allegedly leaked a woman's details to her abuser.

The woman had a domestic violence order out against her former partner but was forced to go into hiding with her child in April this year.

It is believed the man asked a police officer for the woman's address, despite multiple warnings on the internal police system stating her contact details were not to be revealed to him.

The officer is being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command.

Red Heart Foundation spokeswoman Liesl Wharton said it was hard to believe the incident was an accident.

"These are not mistakes, these are not slip ups," Ms Wharton said.

"Police can see that there is a note on the system that says do not supply this individual's information to anyone and somehow this has been ignored."

Liberal National Party spokeswoman Ros Bates said legislation needed to be changed so domestic violence victims' details could not be readily accessed and shared throughout departments.

"It's a recipe for another murder," Ms Bates said.

Ms Wharton said the woman was in fear for her life and the government should reimburse the $5000 she had spent relocating over the past year.
