'Dream come true': Brisbane mum gives birth to triplets born after three miscarriages in two years
A Brisbane mother who suffered the heartbreak of three miscarriages was moved almost to tears as she described the joy of finally delivering not just one healthy baby, but triplets.
Kate Darmody, 38, said it was a “dream come true” to finally become a mother after a heartbreaking two years of back-to-back losses.
“You feel like when other people seem to fall pregnant so easily around you, it’s like standing outside a window watching in, and never being part of the club,” the Ipswich mother told 7 News.
She said the fear of failing to go full term didn't put her off trying to have a family once she and her husband decided they wanted children.
With each miscarriage happening late in the pregnancy, Mrs Darmody said the most recent was also an emotional time from start to end.
“It was terrifying. You get to a point when you can’t relax,” she said.
Babies Lachlan, Alexandra and Evelyn were made possible through IVF after just two embryos were implanted.
They were born by cesarean section at 33 weeks gestation on June 19 - a special present for Dad Ben on his 34th birthday.
Mrs Darmody said she was becoming emotional sharing how she had learned Evelyn meant “most wanted” - because the bub was the last of the three to be born.
Lachlan was the first to arrive. He was born with esophageal atresia, a rare birth defect where part of his esophagus was missing, and he required surgery the following day.
He was placed in intensive care while his two sisters were placed in special care - but he beat them home by a week.
Mum said her little boy, along with his sisters, was now thriving and doing well at home.
At 10 weeks old, the triplets are in good health and doing well, making the Darmody home feel blessed.
“Even when they are raging, you think about how much you went through to have them,” she told 7 News.
“It’s a dream come true.”
The new mother hoped her story would inspire others who have struggled to fall pregnant or go full term, to not give up on their dream of having a family.
