Cyclone Debbie fallout sends veggie prices sky high

Cyclone Debbie’s path of destruction is now hurting the pockets of Queensland consumers.

The cyclone, which left parts of North and Far North Queensland devastated, has also led to a shortage in crops.

And supermarkets have had to compensate by jacking up the prices.

Fruity Capers & Deli’s Nuccio Camuglia said a number of fresh produce items were in shortage.

“At the moment short supply is beans, tomatoes very short supply,” he said.

Mr Camuglia added corn was “very, very short” at the moment adding some winter vegetables into the mix.

Coles is currently selling green beans at $12 per kilo, Woolworth at $9.90 per kilo and some smaller grocers at $14.99 per kilo.

However, the pricing surge on vegies isn’t expected to last with supply to increase and prices set to drop in the coming weeks.
